Announcing Duxbury DBT for Mac 15.1 SR1

DBT 15.1
2026-08-04 (2026-08-07)

DBT 15.1 is our first version with native Apple Silicon and eBraille support, and has several other new and improved features.

Built for Modern Macintosh Computers

• DBT will no longer require Rosetta to run on modern Macintosh^®computers.
• Builds for Macintosh computers with Intel processors may no longer be available. If you require one, please inquire.
• DBT/Mac for Apple silicon cannot import MathType objects embedded in .docx files.

eBraille Support

• DBT 15.1 supports export of eBraille files from braille documents.
• Command line support for eBraille conversion is included, using a new /ebrl command line switch.

Other Exporter Improvements

• Formatted braille files may be saved in Unicode Braille Patterns encoding.

Accessibilty (Windows Only)

• JAWS voicing of the translated line while editing large braille files is better-synchronized to what is shown on a connected braille display..

Importers

• An arbitrary size limitation within DBT has been lifted, allowing for importing larger .docx files.
• The .docx importer now adds a hard space after the function name for a math function.
• The .docx importer will now recognize both old and new definitions of Red, as well as similar custom colors.
• Problems placing images using TactileView 3 have been corrected.

Editing and User Interface

• When hiding codes on the translated line, DBT will hide even codes at the end of the line.
• (Windows only) The status line display is more reliable about leaving sufficient width to show text.
• Several codes have been added to the Codes List dialog.

Language Support

• The English/Unified (UEB) print-to-braille translation table (file enuncp.btb, now version 16;4 260707) has been updated to suppress the contraction "con" in the word "cons" in most instances, excepting only certain cases where the immediate context makes clear that "cons" is a formal or informal abbreviation of a longer word where "con" would be contracted, e.g. "ex-cons" (short for "ex-convicts"). This is an effort to more commonly comply with RUEB 2024 section 10.6.4.
• DBT now includes an updated version of the BANA Template for Microsoft^® Wordâ„¢: BANA Braille 2026. Both >English (UEB) - BANA DBT templates and the style map file for them are updated as well.
• The Urdu (Pakistan) print-to-braille translation table (file urdpcp.btb, now version 5;3 260310) has been updated to fix some reported errors.

DBT 14.1 sr2
2026-02-23 (2026-03-09)

Service Release 2 has a major focus on stability, correcting a few issues, some longstanding, which seem to have been worse in DBT <14.1 than in previous releases.

• UIA-related crashes have been fixed. These were likely to cause problems specifically for JAWS users.
• A problem that caused DBT to crash when closing documents on some customer computers has been fixed. This problem was highly associated with display of a translated line.
• A bug that could cause DBT to crash when using Alt-arrow keys to navigate through a table has been fixed.

Language Support

• Several English (UEB) translation improvements:
  • Improved support for capitalization rules in section 8.8.
  • The "visible space" symbol (dots 346) no longer terminates numeric mode.
  • Contractions are more properly applies in several instances.
• Import of the up-to-date Indian Rupee sign (U+20B9) is now supported as equivalent to the traditional Rupee sign (U+20A8).
• Croatian localization is improved.

Accessibility (Windows Only)

• JAWS scripts are updated and improved:
  • A compatibility problem with recent versions of the JAWS script compiler is fixed.
  • Labeling a Unicode value as hex or decimal.
• DBT's manifest file has been updated to better support JAWS.

Mathematics

• Further improves Equation Editor support:
  • Support for absolute values and other non-default delimiters
  • Support for combining arrows above
• Some problems in the LaTeX importer have been corrected:
  • A Greek letter following a function name imports correctly
  • Use of $$ to mark the stand and end of displayed math is supported

Command Line Processing

• Command line switches that require file names, e.g. target output files and template names, now work with non-ASCII characters in the file names.
• There is a new command line switch to write Refreshable braille output files: /lbf:path_to_output

Other Improvements

• Error handling when interacting with TactileView is improved. (Windows Only)
• Page break ([lea]) codes with alternative fill characters are correctly handled.
• Logging debug() and info() level messages from Python scripts is now possible.

DBT 14.1

Duxbury Systems continually revises DBT to add new features, support new and updated embossers, and fix problems, as well as to respond to the latest revisions in braille rules, operating system updates, and third party changes.

Support for SWIFT

• DBT runs a web service that allows connectivity to a web-based implementation of SWIFT.
• All template (.dxt) files have been to revised to correct a minor error in the names of linear styles. This will be needed to work with web-hosted editions of SWIFT.

BANA Braille Template

• DBT 14.1 includes BANA Braille 2024, an updated version of the BANA Braille template created by Susan Christensen.

Language Support

• Sotho (Northern and Southern Pedi) print-to-braille translation has been modified to update contractions per input from a South African authority, as has Tswana translation.
• Mi'kmaq (Mi'kmaw) translation support has been added in this release.
• The Swahili (Kenya) translators (both print-to-braille and braille-to-print) have been updated to correct the handling of a certain shortform.
• The English/Unified (UEB) print-to-braille translation table has been has been updated to correct a problem whereby a required grade 1 indicator could be missing in certain instances where a hyphen immediately follows an expression explicitly declared to be "technical", e.g. when a "math" style is applied to just the "x" in "x-coordinate". This change also affects translation of several uncontracted languages where print-to-braille translation is derived from the UEB table and UEB learning series ("Weebee Dots") translation. Contracted forms of several unusual words have also been corrected in print-to-braille translation.

Embosser Support

• A top margin adjustment automatically applied to ViewPlus Columbia embossers is now also applied to Irie BrailleTrac embossers.

Python: PDF and Macros

• DBT includes support for importing PDF files and a general-purpose macro facility. These two major new features require support of Python, an optional installation component that may be omitted when required by network policy.

Installer

• Operation of the DBT installer in French is corrected.

Mathematics

• Importation of mathematics markup from the Equation Editor built into Microsoft Word 2007 and newer is considerably improved.

Miscellaneous

• DBT/Win display of error messages from failed imports is improved.
• DBT 14.1 corrects a longstanding defect that would cause unusual instances of extra characters being inserted as the start of the first word of each page when importing .brf or .prf files.
• Over eighty new user interface languages are new to DBT 14.1.

Service Release SR3 is free to all licensed users of DBT 12.7. It includes these fixes as improvements.

• Chuvash, Ingush, and Udmurt are identified as European, not Asian languages.
• Some uncommon contraction errors in English/Unified (UEB) have been corrected.
• Support for Cherokee and Navajo has been added.
• Croatian support has been updated and improved to match the latest specifications we have. Uncontracted braille is now the default.
• Swahili translation has been adapted specifically for Kenya. DBT now offers a Swahili (Kenya) template that supports a contracted braille code that appears to be used only in Kenya, and a Swahili (General) template for use elsewhere.
• We have increased the range of characters that can be imported into DBT, with particular increases in the characters to be imported into the Arabic, Hindi, and Devanagari scripts.
• DBT now imports the long division symbol (U+27cc) properly from MathType. In addition, the Nemeth Code templates properly translate the long division sign and barred brackets from print to braille and back to print again.
• Styles in the English BANA pre-UEB templates have been adjusted so that documents containing math give better support for Nemeth Code.
• There is a new template specifically for uncontracted UEB with Nemeth, to avoid the problem of switching into contracted braille following math segments.
• There are five fonts packaged with DBT: Braille, SimBraille, Braille Français, SimBraille Français, and Swell Braille. Each of these has been updated to version 3.1, incorporating these improvements:
• Encoding of Unicode Braille Patterns characters U+2800 through U+283F as well as Unicode U+2011.
• Improved appearance when ClearType is enabled. This change also applies to display of braille documents in DBT. Please note that disabling ClearType remains preferred.
• Technical fixes that may sometimes have prevented proper rendering, particularly of Braille, Braille Français, and Swell Braille.
• Braille-Build has been fixed and updated to generate version 3.1 fonts.
• Use of <esc>Pnn for Braillo 650SW embossers is restricted to values of nn 01-99. This corrects a problem with embossing certain larger documents.
• We have fixed a problem with single-sided output on classic Enabling Technologies embossers when a page contains graphics.
• The columnar table formatter is better able to handle tables with a few columns, some of which have lots of text.
• A bug that caused unnecessary "failsafe" formatting of tables has been fixed.
• A bug has been fixed to correct formatting of tables on pages witih antipicatory page headings, as used in the UK.
• The Word importer now correctly imports certain Word text boxes that were previously missed.
• The translated line display has been improved, to allow display of all or most codes. Use the "Formatted View Translated Line Codes" control in the Gobal View Preferences dialog to set this up.
• The translated line display for BANA with Nemeth documents eliminates spurious display of shall and which.
• DBT command line processing has been fixed. DBT will now exit now after processing files with /brf option or similar options, unless one or more files is opened using the command line as well.
• On some computers, DBT was prone to crashing when selecting certainly Edit menu items after closing a document. This has been corrected.
• An [mfcs] code without a corresponding [mfce] code will no longer cause DBT to lock up.

DBT 12.7 sr2
2023-10-03 (2023-10-02)

Service Release SR2 is free to all licensed users of DBT 12.7. It includes these fixes as improvements.

• Handling of Nemeth in two templates, English (BANA Pre-UEB Textbook DE) - BANA and English (BANA Pre-UEB Textbook DE) - BANA Nemeth, has been corrected.
• English/Unified (UEB) braille-to-print translation has been improved. The same improvements are included in all the learning tables.
• Croatian braille-to-print translation has been improved.
• Serbian braille-to-print translation has been improved.
• Placement of the second page of a two page table has been corrected.
• When importing math as UEB with Nemeth, a problem in DBT 12.7 caused the loss of the space after problem numbers in a list of problems within the Nemeth switches. This problem has been fixed.
• Preference file names have been regularized. (Through this release, each new release ignores the user settings of prior versions. This will not happen from this point forward.)

DBT 12.7 sr1
2023-9-06 (2023-9-11)

DBT 12.7 SR1 has been released free to all users of DBT 12.7 to fix a few critical issues:

• A new problem causing crashes with tabular material has been fixed.
• DBT does not crash when you set a window of fewer than 9 lines.
• Import of braille files using "Orbit Reader" no longer favors uppercase. This improves subsequent braille-to-print translation.
• There is a new template "Haitian Creole". The translation is identical to French uncontracted.
• DBT can now read characters beyond U+FFFF; it supports 54 new Unicode ranges beyond this limit. These are largely ancient languages and additional Asian scripts. The most requested scripts are Cuneiform and Ugaritic. Click here for an external web page for the details.

DBT 12.7
2023-8-04 (2023-8-07)

DBT 12.7 provides the following important improvements and fixes and more.

Document Importing

• Importing .docx files avoids an unusual pitfall that could cause a DBT crash.

Document Exporting

• HTML and Word exports can reconstruct hyperlinks from DBT markup when a URL is included. Importers for HTML and .docx files produce the appropriate markup, so hyperlinks can, in effect, be preserved round-trip through braille.
• HTML and Word exports can be customized.
• HTML and Word exports improve handling of many DBT styles, producing better indent and runover in the output.

Math

• Nemeth math-only print-to-braille translation has been updated to prevent insertion of unwanted script indicators in certain instances.
• Nemeth math-only braille-to-print translation has been updated for miscellaneous improvements including to the handling of typeform indicators and math styles.
• Improved recognition of the start and end of math when importing Word documents.

DBT Operations / General

• Find and Replace dialogs support limited wildcard use in codes.
• A new parameter in the [ind] code allows for right alignment of many lines of text.
• The menu and dialog in the Global menu formerly labeled Autosave Options is now labeled File Locations. You can use this dialog to set default locations for Open and Save dialogs. The dialog still allows for management of autosave options.
• DBT supports a new command line switch /resetfilesavefolder or /resetfileopenfolder for use when the Save As dialog or Open dialog will not appear, or appears only after a long delay. Please contact technical support for help using this.

Language Updates

	Estonian: braille-to-print translation improved the handling of spaces following emphasis. Localized display of braille documents added.
	Fula: Revised Fula translators are now identical to the new West African languages translators.
	Japanese: handling of Kanji is greatly improved, especially for words comprising multiple Kanji characters.
	Japanese: improved braille-to-print and print-to-braille handling of embedded Latin script text and certain special characters.
	Khakas: language support added.
	Khmer: braille-to-print translation improved the handling of independent vowels.
	Korean: braille-to-print translation improved the handling of a certain character after dots 126.
	N'ko (language and script): support through West African Languages.
	Slovak: improved print-to-braille and braille-to-print translation, using the latest rule book.
	Tifinagh (language and script): support through West African Languages.
	Vai (language and script): support through West African Languages.
	West African Languages: New language added (print-to-braille and braille-to-print). This is not an official code, but intended to serve for myriad West African languages with no currently defined official code, unless and until an official code is defined. Support for many scripts (Arabic, Extended Arabic, Amhrmic, N'ko, Vai, and Tifinagh) is included. More information is available online.

DBT 12.6 SR1 provides the following important improvements and fixes and more.

Reference Page Numbering

Reference Page Numbering, also known as Print Page Numbering, is an important formatting feature of textbooks and other documents where collaboration with inkprint readers is important. DBT 12.6 SR1 has made several important improvements to the handling of Reference Page Numbering:

• DBT's formatter can automatically increment reference page numbers in both print and braille documents.
• The code used to trigger automatic incrementing can be assigned to the keyboard shortcut used for introducing new Reference Page Numbers, by using the Shortcut Preferences Dialog in the Global menu.
• Importing page break locations from Word (.docx) files now works with modern desktop versions of Word and on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
• For users of Duxbury's BANA Template for Microsoft Word, we've made one other improvement. Where a RefPageNumber paragraph style is used in the middle of a list, DBT will automatically convert this to a RefPageNumberEmbed style to avoid erroneous skipped lines in the list.

Accessibility

• The Canute Braille E-Reader is now supported by DBT.

Document Importing

• We corrected imports of files tagged for spelling/grammar when Word uses the bidi attribute instead of the val attribute to mark the language. This affects, in particular, .docx files containing blends of English and Hindi.
• There are several fixes for importing Word documents with MathType expressions. These changes fix problems with use of the prime symbol and accidental use of a forced hyphen. Importation of function names followed by a Greek letter is also fixed.
• Custom importers (command lines specified in dbt.uit) are no longer restricted to eight-bit command lines, and the command lines are essentially unlimited in length. This makes is more generally possible to use a custom importer on any given document file, regardless of the name and location of the file.
• Custom importers may produce UTF-8 output, provided that a Byte Order Mark is placed at the start of the file. The Byte Order Mark is three bytes: 0xEF, 0xBB, 0xBF. DBT will not compress spaces for UTF-8 custom importer output files, as it does for customer importer output files encoded as DUSCI.
• DBT can properly import indexed roots ([ixtrs]...[ixrte]) from OpenXML (.docx) mathematics markup.
• Importing .docx files containing numerous footnotes and/or endnotes is now more stable, uses less memory, and is faster.

Document Exporting

• Korean text is exported properly to .prf files (but only when UTF-8 encoding is selected)

Math

• We have changed the math style in the templates English (BANA Pre-UEB Textbook DE) - BANA Textbook Fmt and English (BANA Pre-UEB Textbook DE) - BANA Nemeth. Instead of using the codes [ts] and [te] to switch into and out of technical notation, the math style now switches into and out of the Nemeth translation table. This change makes the translated line meaningful for Nemeth technical notation in these pre-UEB templates.
• See other math changes in the language improvements.

Embosser Support

• DBT now supports Z-fold format on Index FanFold embossers
• QuickTac and similar (.sig format) graphics may be produced on ViewPlus embossers, when embedded in a DBT document.
• A problem that caused DBT to improperly scale TactileView images on ViewPlus embossers has been fixed.
• We have fixed a DBT bug that caused excessive popup errors when embossing to Nippon Telesoft Super Gemini embossers with interline print.

DBT Operations / General

• The G1Passage style has been added to all UEB templates. This should be used for spelling lists and similar items as directed by the UEB rule books.
• We have corrected the processing of modified End Codes in Custom formatted tables of contents.
• We have corrected two issues with Replace All in the Editor. The first problem is that the Replace All logic will miss a code (or, presumably, text) that is to be replaced the second (and fourth, etc.) time where it appears immediately after itself. The second problem is a popup message that reports DBT is unable to locate a cursor when Replace All is complete.
• DBT better supports two-page tables. These are tables whose rows spread between two braille pages.
• A potential for DBT to lock up during translation has been resolved.
• Minor updates have been made in the UKAAF template to improve formatting, including of poems.

DBT 12.6
2022-4-15 (2022-4-25)

DBT 12.6 provides the following important improvements and fixes and more.

User Interface/ Commands / Accessibility

• DBT Editor, Coded View: improved display of non-breaking spaces, non-breaking hyphens, and assisted hyphens.
• Cut and Paste in the SEARCH and REPLACE Dialog: When working on a braille document, the DBT editor now allows cutting and pasting codes containing the tilde (~) and other non-braille characters.
• Replace All: This editing function has been revised for stability and should always produce the expected result.
• For the Mac platform, greatly improved cursor routing support with refreshable braille displays.

Embosser Support

• Super Gemini Embosser:  Duxbury added support in DBT (Win) for variations in the font used for interline print.
• Index Embossers and Humanware (Enabling) Embossers: NEW! Selecting DP6 (double-sided landscape z-fold embossing) versus DP7 (single-sided landscape z-fold embossing).
• Braillo 300, 300 S2, 450 S2, 600, 600 S2: The page length specifications for A4 paper on all these models has been updated (to 83 x 117).
• Enabling Embossers (the classic models that support graphics): Both center and right alignment of tactile graphics output as specified.

DBT Operations / General

• Command line processing: has implemented the command line switch /RemovePrinterInfo, used when saving custom DBT templates.
• The command line now handles wide Unicode characters for file names that can appear in world alphabets.
• Editing: Duxbury fixed a number of customer issues including a reported crash under certain circumstances of saving a file, and a problem inserting a Word document into an open DBT editing session when using Coded View with JAWS and UI Automation.
• Templates: Updated the "English (UEB) - UK formatting (UKAAF)" template to cure problems in SWIFT.
• Activation: Minor improvements to the activation wizard.
• DBT Installer: A bug that could install the support file "en/actwiz.mo" multiple times has been fixed.

Document Importing

• Math Type imports: We resolved a problem in trigonometric functions such as sin, cos, tan, etc., when followed by a Greek letter; the needed space after the function name is now present.
• Orbit Reader imports / BRL Files: the Orbit Reader import filter has a change to ensure that the braille dot patterns dot 4, dots 45, 1256, 246, 12456, and 456 are mapped to the preferred ASCII character to allow recognition by the braille-to-print translators. This makes the Orbit Reader Import filter a good choice when importing .brl files from any refreshable braille device.

• LaTeX: improvements cover additional cases of emphasis/typeform indicators in the markup.

Language Updates

	Languages of India: Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Panjabi, Sinhala, Telugu. The accuracy of the braille-to-print translations for these Indian languages has been improved.
	All eleven official languages ofSouth Africa: have fully functional braille-to-print translators suitable for demanding applications (Afrikaans, English, and the nine indigenous languages: Ndebele, Nguni, Sotho, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu).
	Mathematics Braille: There is a correction for the "identical to" symbol (dots 456 123456) in the English (UEB) braille-to-print table and in 11 non-English braille-to-print tables: including Afrikaans, Welsh, Irish, Biblical Original Languages, Esperanto, and several of the indigenous South African languages.
	Amharic: The print-to-braille translation table, and braille-to-print table, are updated to correct the representation of the Amharic syllable "do", and to extend support for the "simplified mode."
	Biblical Original Languages tables improved.
	Danish, Greenlandic: The translation tables in both directions, print-to-braille and braille-to-print, have been updated to correct handling of certain indicators, including emphasis and termination of capitals, and to remove pre-UEB American-style English braille as a secondary language. The associated Danish (and Greenlandic) uncontracted tables were likewise updated.
	English / UEB: The English/Unified Braille translation tables, both print-to-braille and braille-to-print, have been updated to disallow interior type form changes within words standing alone, which affects short-form usage in rare cases. They also correct the contraction usage of several unusual words, and include the recent decisions of the UEB Code Maintenance Committee. The "learning series" (partial contraction) tables for BANA: TSBVI Clusters, Mangold Method, and NLS I.M.B.T.; those for UKAAF/BAUK: Braille in Easy Steps, Fingerprint (UEB), and Take off Series; and OTHERS: RNZFB STAR and S.A. Syllabus Level are included in these updates. If you wish us to include your language's curricula for learning tables, please contact us at: languages@duxsys.com.
	Finnish: The braille translation tables in both directions, print-to-braille and braille-to-print, have been updated to correct emphasis indicators and a punctuation mark.
	Quebec French, Pre-Unified: The print-to-braille table corrects the encoding for a square shape input character.
	Greek: The print-to-braille table is updated to correct the encoding of dasia in the entry for alpha upsilon with varia and dasia.
	Igbo: NEW! This language now has a braille-to-print (reverse) translation table. Also, the print-to-braille translation table is updated to correct the representation of several characters.
	Latvian: The braille translation tables in both directions, print-to-braille and braille-to-print, have been updated to conform to newer standards for certain indicators and punctuation marks.
	Mathematics – Nemeth Code: The Nemeth translator already adds spaces around many signs of comparison including all of the common ones. This handling has just been added for double length arrows. Also, when a comparison sign is at the end of a math style, the translator now correctly adds a space before the sign but not after it. In addition, we fixed a problem that could cause the omission of a baseline indicator needed after a term with subscripts and/or superscripts when followed by a trigonometric function.
	Romanian: The print-to-braille translation table has been updated to provide support for Cyrillic characters, still sometimes found in Romanian and Moldovan text.
	Serbian: Improved braille-to-print translation including the correction of two non-alphabetic symbols in Cyrillic text.
	Slovak: Updated print-to-braille & braille-to-print tables for a number of symbols specified by the Slovak braille authority. Also, fixed the local encoding to enable correct Slovak braille display.
	Slovenian: Because of recent contact with Slovenian braille experts, we have reworked the Slovenian print-to-braille table. The changes include the typeform indicators (bold, italic, etc.), and the decimal comma. A corresponding braille-to-print table has been developed, and a new template added for grade 1 (uncontracted) Slovenian braille.
	Swedish: has improved translation tables in both directions, print-to-braille and braille-to-print, respecting certain punctuation signs and emphasis indicators.
	Urdu: The print-to-braille translation table has been updated to correct the representation of the Arabic letter "heh goal" (Unicode: U+06C1).

Service Release 4 of DBT 12.5 provides the following important improvements and fixes and more.

• Translation table improvements:
  • All eleven South African languages now have braille-to-print translators.
  • Several UEB and UEB-compatible (non-English) braille-to-print translation tables have been updated to correct the translation of dots 456, 123456 to U+2261, the "identical to" sign, instead of U+224D, the "equivalent to" sign (used in mathematics).
  • The Serbian braille-to-print translation table has been updated to correct two non-alphabetic symbols in Cyrillic text.
  • The pre-unified Quebec-French print-to-braille table has been updated to correct the encoding for a square shape input character.
  • The Greek print-to-braille translation table has been updated to correct the encoding of "dasia" (rough breathing) in the entry for alpha upsilon with varia and dasia.

Faster Software Response

DBT operations have been considerably accelerated: translated line display, editing, pasting large blocks of text, etc., are significantly faster than any prior version of DBT.

Document Importing

• DBT imports any Alt Text attached to images as paragraphs by themselves when imported from Word documents.
• The Word (.docx) importer has corrections and improvements to: paragraph number handling, the handling of language switches, and text set in Duxbury's French braille fonts. It also more fully automates markup of table header rows, and its UEB Typeform mappings feature is improved.
• DBT will center otherwise unstyled lines imported from Word documents.
• A low-level defect that may have caused document corruption in the past during imports and editing has been eliminated.
• The Word importer will correct problematic Listed Table markup introduced by SWIFT.
• Import of certain Cantonese text has been corrected.
• Import of Unicode markup with combining diacritics (including U+0300 and U+0301) has been improved.
• Automated markup of hyperlinks that include parameters is improved.

User Interface

• New controls in the Table of Contents dialog handle reference page numbering and improve TOC layout.
• New options are added to the Create Template dialog to include printer setups, embosser setups, and/or include text and codes in your custom templates. Adding these options will save the template in binary format. Without them the template is saved in text format.
• A new menu item allows you to undo "Don't show me this again" dialog preferences.
• The translated line display is cleaner in formatted view.
• On-screen display of the hard hyphen character (D+EC41) is fixed. This character frequently appears in UEB when translating an underline or macron.
• The Activation Wizard is newly localized to French and Korean. The Activation Wizard will run in your preferred interface language, when a translation is available.
• The Activation Wizard has been improved to more readily allow switching licenses and to give better details in case of a failure to connect to a network license server.

Major Improvements

• Improvements to forward and back translation for over 40 languages! ( See the Languages section for details.)
• Support for 7 new embossers and improved support for 7 current embossers. (See Embosser Improvements below.)
• The Listed Table and Stair step Table formatters are greatly improved.
• Non-breaking spaces can be copied from DBT documents to other applications intact.
• The Swell Braille font is included with DBT. This font is used when printing on swell paper: dots are 80% of normal to allow for swelling when passed through the fuser.

• ViewPlus Columbia support is improved. Note: Updated drivers are strongly recommended for macOS.
• ViewPlus Delta embossers support booklet printing on 11 x 17 paper.
• Braillo: DBT offers more direct support for variable line spacing on Braillo embossers. A separator sheet can now be placed between copies when writing to Braillo 600 SR embossers.
• DBT supports all Braillo's new "Series 2" (S2) embossers (the 300, 450, and 600).
• Interpoint 55 output can be sent in reverse order.
• Irie embosser support is improved. Front/back page alignment of interpoint output on the Irie BrailleTrac 120 is corrected.

Several other language tables, which use UEB conventions for quotation marks, contain this same update. Print-to-braille translation of a number of uncommon words has been corrected. In UEB transcription, a word that breaks across more than two lines will include a continuation indicator at all appropriate places.
	The English (UEB) - UK formatting (UKAAF) template and corresponding style map are updated.
	Estonian print-to-braille and braille-to-print translation has been improved through feedback from an Estonian user. The Estonian template now reserves the bottom line of each page for braille page numbers with no preceding text.

	Filipino, Tagalog, and the regional languages of the Philippines (Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and Iloko): The basic templates for all of the Philippine languages are now set to use the Nemeth code for mathematics and technical notation as their standard choice.

The French tables improve print-to-braille handling of ligatures preceded by a hyphen, they perform better capitalization of combined letters, better handling of certain spaced numeral expressions, and improved braille-to-print translation of math and text. Along with these, the handling of French footnote and endnote reference numbers has been fixed.
	** Fulah (a.k.a, Fula): newly added language (print to braille), spoken in Guinea.

Primarily, this service release resolves issues reported with respect to specific embossers.

• For Columbia embossers, this release realigns the front to back registration, restoring the correct spacing.
• For the Interpoint Elekul 55 (Belgium), output has been fully updated to restore all functionality. (A Reminder: It is important that the path to PRINT55.EXE be properly set in the Device Settings tab of the Global Embosser Setup. A newly created embosser setup will have this set correctly by default.)
• The TranSend SE embosser has a restored font list.

In addition:

• We have modified DBT's .bru importer w.r.t. importing notetaker .brl files. (These braille files are typically formatted with each paragraph as one long line.) If you begin your .brl file with the four characters "_%_:", the DBT importer treats the file as Nemeth Code in UEB context, causing it to automatically assign the styles math and math-TextInMath where appropriate. This handling matches the .brf file importer handling for .brf files starting with those four characters.
• - We have revised and updated the DBT Help files, focusing on the topics that describe the different braille translators. We hope that customers gain a better understanding of the Duxbury DBT translators through our efforts to improve our documentation.

The core of Duxbury DBT and its translators has not changed.

Major Improvements

• For lengthy file imports, DBT now displays a progress bar.
• DBT opens files faster, with quicker performance in general operations.
• In UEB templates, there is a new chemistry style. For any technical notation within the chemistry style, there is no use of word or passage capital indicators, as each capital letter is capitalized separately.
• The NEW Bristol Braille Canute Mk13 Braille eReader is supported as an embosser.
• Graphic images in centered headings are now well handled.
• The BANA Listed Tables format is restored.
• The insertion of [hl] codes is no longer restricted when importing DAISY or XML files, as it is for Word files.
• The biggest additions in languages are starter tables for the Arabic, German, Russian, and Spanish math (technical notation) braille systems. These braille math codes may impact braille production in over 80 countries.
  • Templates for these four languages all have a math style. For example, if you use the math style in a German template, you get German math braille. For ease of use, the math style is inserted automatically when you import a LaTeX file.
  • The Russian math translator affects technical braille for many languages: Armenian (Eastern), Azerbaijani, Belorussian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Chuvash, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Georgian, Hungarian, Ingush, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovakian, Tajik, Tatar, Turkmen, Udmurt, Ukrainian, Uzbek.
  • The Arabic language and unified Arabic braille rules are used in over 25 countries.
  • The Spanish language and unified Spanish braille rules are used in about 20 countries.
  • You are invited to test the math braille translators and send suggested improvements to languages@duxsys.com.
• Sample files for over a hundred languages are incorporated into the DBT Help so that you can quickly test DBT in an unfamiliar language.

Mathematics Braille

• UTF-8 conversion is now built into our LaTeX importer. This allows non-ASCII characters in the text: unusual accented letters, non-Roman scripts such as Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, etc., to be imported directly into DBT as combined text and math in a single step.
• The LaTeX importer now treats the code $$, when adjacent to a tab character, as the start or end of displayed math.
• The LaTeX importer no longer generates a space in cases where a LaTeX or MathType passage includes a "thin space". These extra spaces caused unneeded braille indicators in some math translators.
• The LaTeX importer no longer ignores some absolute value signs.
• The LaTeX importer now handles Greek letter variant forms, the so-called blackboard characters, and some additional special characters.
• Handling of reference page indicators in UEB with Nemeth is improved.
• The ending codes for the math style have been refined. We have moved the [i] code to the end, which prevents the insertion of the grade 1 indicator before certain punctuation marks, such as the question mark.

Embossers

• DBT can now generate interline print for Gemini embossers.
• DBT supports the ViewPlus "Tiger" registry key and enforces a 0.5 inch minimum top margin for the Columbia embosser.
  • The Columbia model, with a top margin setting of 0 now has an effective 0.5" top margin. A top margin setting of 1 has an effective 0.65" top margin. For higher top margin settings in DBT, the effective margin is 0.4" times the number entered in DBT.
• For dual ink and braille embossers, DBT eliminates most inappropriate gaps in the inkprint text.
• DBT codes no longer appear in the interline print of embosser output.
• For entries in the printer queue, DBT no longer adds "(Ink)" to the document name when not appropriate.
• DBT now prints TactileView (TV) Images to the Columbia embosser - and presumably other ViewPlus embossers - at the intended size. Note that the image size is not set directly from DBT, but DBT ensures that the size should be the same in the output as on screen. (Note: the size is determined by the image height, and images that are too wide for the page are likely to be clipped. For such images, direct output from TV may be the appropriate approach.)

Language Updates

According to the 2013 UNESCO document World Braille Usage, Arabic Pre-2002 is the official Arabic translator for Bahrain, Iran, Malaysia, and Indonesia. DBT now has a template for the Pre-2002 Arabic translator.

To assist those studying ancient languages, a new template and translator for the transcription of Semitic Languages has been added.

The English UEB translation table was changed to allow the functionality of the chemistry style, and also to refine the contraction use in a series of uncommon words.

New Braille Embossers

• DBT adds support for two new Irie embossers, the BrailleSheet 120 and the BrailleTrac 120.
• Graphics on Index V5 embossers now output using the "floating dot" format. One benefit is that TactileView graphics output successfully when embedded in a DBT document sent to an Index V5 embosser.

Math Improvements

• MathType 7 is now supported.
• French mathematics braille is now supported in the French Unified braille-to-print translator.
• Users can now import braille formatted files (BRF's) containing UEB with Nemeth Code, as long as the file starts with a special 4-cell braille header: _%_:
• The MAVIS module now correctly recognizes mixed numbers at the start of math mode.

English UEB

• Now supports document-specific Typeform Indicators as defined in the UEB Rules of Unified English Braille Section 9 for inkprint attributes that carry meanings the braille reader needs to know about . A range of such indicators can be defined such as the use of Script Font, Text Color or Highlight Color, as well as Drop Shadow and Outline Text. See the new user interface in the Global: Word-Importer dialogue.
• Certain currency expressions, when marked as "technical notation," no longer give rise to an unnecessary grade one word indicator.
• When a sequence of single capitalized letters is treated as a passage, the last such letter is included in the passage.
• If [ps]...[pe] (i.e. superscript) codes immediately surround a trademark symbol (U+2122), they are now discarded as redundant.
• Contractions of several uncommon medical terms have been improved.

New Embossers and Embosser Fixes

• For translating into Nemeth Code in UEB context, we have solved a problem that caused intermittent errors at the start of math sections, such as a missing numeric indicator for a number at the start of a Nemeth Code section.
• When importing a LaTeX file (from Scientific Notebook or another source) to create Nemeth Code in a UEB context, DBT now correctly suppresses the terminating and starting Nemeth indicators where there should be a "pass through in math" section; it also puts in the "one-word switch" where appropriate.
• When importing math for Nemeth Code in UEB context, embedded text in a math expression that occurs inside a pass through in math section no longer causes problems.
• The translated line no longer drops spaces in certain locations. Specifically, use of the math style now does not cause a space to be dropped on the translated line.
• When importing a LaTeX file that uses the command \includegraphics, the DBT document now gives the filename of the graphics file.

User Interface

• The Global, Word-Importer dialogue has a new option for mapping font characteristics to transcriber-defined Typeform Indicators for English UEB.
• Selecting the correct language for Han character import now happens automatically with the choice of a DBT template. (Previously this selection always had to be done manually from the Global, Import Options dialogue, and that option is still allowed if the user wishes to continue to specify the choice directly.)
• DBT updates documents immediately when certain global options are changed.

Miscellaneous Changes

• We have improved the display of the translated line in formatted print documents for languages that introduce discretionary hyphens.
• We have added two spaces to the formatted-view translated line at each place where a tab code is present in the markup.
• We have eliminated the introduction of a bullet and space at the start of some "numbered" paragraphs in .docx files, where Word itself does not show them.
• Treatment of blank cells in columnar tables has been amended to come more completely into compliance with BANA Guidelines.
• The BANA Listed Table format now conforms to BANA Formats 2011 (11.16.1.e), so that for each row, the first element is formatted as a cell-5 heading. (That first element is normally labeled with the column heading.)
• A Byte Order Mark, if present, is now stripped from the start of Unicode text imports, particularly when imported through DBT's formatted text importer.
• DBT now adds codes to control spacing within the Exact Translation style when importing Word .doc and .docx files.

	Dzongkha: DBT supports the new braille rules.
	IPA: handles the UEB indicators for brackets and slash.
	Korean: the braille-to-print translation has many improvements.
	Portuguese: now handles four additional punctuation marks in braille-to-print translation.
	Slovenian: the braille-to-print direction now uses the new Croatian braille-to-print translator.
	Spanish: braille-to-print translation can produce a proper period in all contexts.
	Thai: fixed two formerly incorrect characters in print-to-braille.
	Venda: improvements in print-to-braille; now includes a functional braille-to-print translator.
	Welsh (Cymraeg): fixed some previously incorrect contractions.

Primary Improvements

• In all UEB templates as well as those derived from UEB, the computer braille styles are updated to render accurate word breaking. Only those templates specifically for older (pre-UEB) documents still enforce the Pre-UEB word breaking rules.
• The four DBT BANA templates (both UEB and Pre-UEB) are once again updated to the most recent versions. This corrects some formatting errors in the 12.1 BANA templates and includes BB-BoxBegin and H1-HeadingCentered.
• In the English/American (pre-UEB) print-to-braille tables, the output of underline symbols is restored.
• In the English/Unified (UEB) print-to-braille table certain contractions that follow an apostrophe have been improved.
• The Afrikaans print-to-braille table and Sotho print-to-braille table have been updated with contraction changes received recently from South Africa.
• Refinements in the Welsh print-to-braille table restrict shortform usage within large words to the officially approved list and ensure that strings of letters that could be read as extended shortforms are appropriately marked with grade 1 indicators. Other improvements include automated generation of hyphenation points within long technical expressions such as URLs.
• For Myanmar text, DBT now handles some additional, critical Burmese characters for translating Burmese text to braille.

Mathematics

Numerous additions to math functionality; here are the highlights:

• Many more unusual mathematics characters are now handled
• Spacing and control of spacing around function names in UEB math and French math have been improved
• Better importing of aligned structures
• Better handling of the Unicode minus sign
• Nemeth translation has been updated to use dot 6 for the comma when outside of "technical notation" but still in "Nemeth mode." This means that in the English (UEB) - BANA with Nemeth template, a comma in the style math-TextInMath is brailled as dot 6, rather than dots 456,2 following Nemeth rules.

UEB Updates

• When translating material into UEB, the translator is more selective about switching to a grade one passage for technical notation
• Improved auto-hyphenation, including grouping of braille numbers 16 cells or less in length
• Symbols that are not hyphens nor dashes, but contain dots 36, are no longer allowed as potential line break points
• The translation of certain unusual names has been fixed
• The translation of mixed alpha-numerics, such as AA.12, has been adjusted to be easier to read in braille
• Mid-line ellipsis (U+22EF), double or triple dots over a variable name, and other uncommon math symbols, are now treated correctly
• The Latin letter schwa (U+0259) and primary and secondary stress symbols, when entered as U+02C8 and U+02CC respectively, are now supported
• Braille-to-print support for Old/Middle English letters: yogh, thorn, eth and wynn
• Plus many other changes to improve the production of UEB braille

Restored Functionality

• Restoration of the francais.mws Word style map file
• Repair of the Hindi file importer

Misc Features

• Improved read only text controls and their acceptance of keyboard focus
• Improved identification and differentiation of single and double quotes
