Contracted Braille
Turkish is usually produced in contracted braille. This means that there are abbreviations (contractions) in the text. If you have questions about how your braille should be produced, please contact a member of your braille authority.
Turkish Contraction Levels
Turkish schools use 6 different levels of braille:
- The first year is spent using uncontracted braille.
- The second year uses braille that incorporates single level contractions (DBT Learning Level 1).
- The third year uses braille that adds two letter contractions (DBT Learning Level 2).
- The fourth year uses braille that incorporates syllable contractions (DBT Learning Level 3).
- The fifth year uses braille that adds in word base contractions (DBT Learning Level 4).
- The sixth year (and beyond) use braille that also adds the suffix contractions (producing fully contracted braille).
DBT produces all 6 levels of braille. When you open a document using a Turkish template, you will see on the Document Menu an additional menu item called, Learning Level which allows you to select any of the four learning levels. Using either that or the Translation Codes, you can select uncontracted, a Learning Level, or fully contracted Turkish braille.
