Filipino Flag of the Philippines

Filipino is the "national" language of the Philippines, largely based on Tagalog, and with the intention of enrichment using elements of the other Philippine languages.

There is only one DBT template for Filipino: Filipino - Basic.

In this language, mathematics and technical notation are typically represented using the Nemeth Code.

Contracted Braille

Filipino is usually produced in contracted braille. This means that words are not produced in braille on a one-for-one basis. Instead, there are abbreviations or contractions in the text. If you have questions about how braille is produced, please contact a member of the relevant braille authority.

Producing this language in uncontracted braille is also quite easy in DBT. Before translation into braille, place the cursor at the top of the document and use the Grade 1 command (Alt+1). When the document is translated, the braille will be uncontracted.

Languages of the Philippines

Whether or not Tagalog and Filipino are actually two separate languages is not a braille issue. The fact that the two names are both widely used has prompted Duxbury to list both. Either choice employs the same heavily contracted braille system. The other Philippine languages are lightly contracted.
