English (BANA Pre-UEB) XML (DAISY, NISO, NIMAS) Format Flag of the United States

Note: This template has been largely superceded.

This DBT template was designed to produce material written in the English language and structured in the (DAISY) XML format used for books adhering to the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard. This is a Pre-UEB template, but UEB is now standard. Furthermore, the common XML (Daisy-NISO) styles have been incorporated into all of the "Basic" templates, e.g., English (UEB) - Basic. Therefore, almost any template can now be used to work with XML files.

Page number positions: Formatting is typical for BANA textbooks, i.e. print page number in upper right, braille page number in lower right.

Style library: This set of styles was designed to work well for importing XML (Daisy-NISO) tagged files.

Translation table: English/American, i.e. for primarily literary usage per BANA's "English Braille American Edition".

Meeting Exacting Standards

For users in the United States and Canada, the BANA DBT templates are used to meet exacting formatting standards. Quite often, braille transcribers prepare the text in Microsoft Word. Usually, those files use a BANA Word template. Click here to learn more about the Word template.

Contracted Braille

This language is usually produced in contracted braille. This means that words are not produced in braille on a one-for-one basis: there are abbreviations (contractions) in the text. If you have questions about producing correct braille, please contact a member of your local braille authority.

Producing this language in uncontracted braille is also quite easy in DBT. Before translation into braille, place the cursor at the top of the document and use the Grade 1 command (Alt+1). When the document is translated, the braille will be uncontracted.
